The Project ³Empowerment of the US-Italy Community²

Twelve scholarships are available to young Italian citizens residing in the U.S. (New York and New Jersey Consular area). The twelve students must be 35 years old or younger and will attend a course in online journalism and web community management with a special focus on Italian and Italian-American affairs.

On January 22, 2007, the EUSIC project (Empowerment of the US-Italy Community) published its announcement of competition. The initiative is funded by the Italian Ministry of Labor and Welfare within the program “Support Actions for the Education of Italian Citizens Living in non-E.U. Countries”.

The project¹s main goal is to enhance the social, cultural, and information network of the Italian community in the U.S. To achieve this goal an innovative, bilingual web community portal will be created, and 12 young people will be trained to produce journalistic and cultural content in order to manage the activities of the online community.

The project leader is the Department of Sociology and Communication of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.

The U.S. partners include; Gruppo Editoriale Oggi (the New Jersey-based publisher of the Italian-language daily America Oggi), US-Italia Publishing Corporation, and Digitalians Corporation, an internet company based in New York City. On the Italian side, the partnership includes the publishing house Edizioni Scientifiche Italiane of Naples, and the consulting firm Futuribile of Rome.

Institutions such as the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, the Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò of New York University, and the John D. Calandra Italian-American Institute of CUNY will participate by hosting lectures as well as internships and project-related activities. Other supporting organizations are The Association of Italian Correspondents in North America, the Italian American Committee on Education, the Dante Alighieri Society of New York, and Gruppo Esponenti Italiani.

Applications will be accepted until March 2, 2007. Training activities will start after selection of students. Courses and lectures will be held by Italian and American university professors and journalists.

Dodici borse di studio per altrettanti giovani italiani residenti nell¹area consolare di New York e New Jersey interessati ad ad un corso di formazione per giornalisti e ³online community manager² esperti in tematiche italiane e italo-americane.

È uscito il 22 gennaio il bando del progetto E.USIC (Empowerment of US-Italy Community), una iniziativa formativa finanziata dal Ministero del Lavoro e della Previdenza Sociale, nell¹ambito del programma ³Interventi per la formazione degli Italiani residenti in Paesi non appartenenti all¹U.E.²

La finalità del progetto è di contribuire al rafforzamento dei legami sociali, culturali e informativi nella collettività italiana in USA. A tal scopo sarà realizzato per gli italiani in America un innovativo portale Web, aperto alla partecipazione dell¹intera comunità, e verranno formati 12 giovani in grado di produrre contenuti giornalistici e culturali e di gestire ed animare le attività della comunità in rete.

Il capofila del progetto è il Dipartimento di Sociologia e Comunicazione dell¹Università di Roma ³La Sapienza².

Tra i partner americani figurano il Gruppo Editoriale Oggi, USItalia Publishing Corporation e la società di servizi internet Digitalians Corporation. In Italia il partenariato include le Edizioni Scientifiche Italiane di Napoli e la società Futuribile di Roma.

Istituzioni come l¹Istituto Italiano di Cultura di New York, la Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò della New York University, il John D. Calandra Italian-American Institute della City University of New York sostengono il progetto e saranno sede di alcune attività seminariali, di internship e di project-work.

Tra gli altri enti che hanno manifestato interesse per il progetto figurano l¹Associazione dei Corrispondenti Italiani nel Nord America (ACINA), il Gruppo Esponenti Italiani (GEI), la Società Dante Alighieri di New York, l¹Italian American Committee on Education (IACE).

Il bando di selezione resterà aperto per 40 giorni, fino al 2 marzo, ed è diretto a persone di età non superiore ai 35 anni. Le attività formative inizieranno dopo la selezione degli allievi e comprenderanno una serie di corsi e seminari, sia in presenza che in e-learning, nonché alcuni mesi di stage e project-work. Tra i docenti figurano professori universitari italiani e statunitensi, giornalisti delle testate partner e corrispondenti italiani negli USA.
