Professor Joseph Sungolowsky
Department of European Languages and Literatures



He is professor of French Literature and Jewish Studies. He is a graduate of the Lycée Masséna
(Nice, France). He holds a Baccalauréat-ès-Lettres,
a BA (Yeshiva University), an MA (New York University) and a PhD (Yale University).

He is the author of Alfred de Vigny et le dix-huitème siècle, (Paris, Nizet), Beaumarchais, (Twayne, New York), studies on Flaubert and Zola, articles and reviews that have appeared in various scholarly journals. He teaches courses on 18th century French Literature, French Romanticism and the19th century French novel. He is preparing a study on Emile Zola and the Jewish condition.

Professor Sungolowsky writes and teaches courses on Jewish themes in French Literature and Thought and the Literature of the Holocaust. He is the author of studies on Romain Gary, Elie Wiesel, I.B. Singer, Chaim Grade etc.. A work in progress is a monograph on Edmond Fleg (1874 - 1963), a French Jewish poet, playwright and novelist.

 

He wrote on Jean Paul Sartre's Anti-Semite and Jew (1948) and on Zola's involvement in the Dreyfus Affair (1898). The 50th anniversary and centennial respectively of these events are being celebrated this year.

Professor Sungolowsky was named Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Knight in the Order of the Academic Palms) by the French government.
