Summer HS Minority Workshop
The three-week Summer Journalism Workshop for Minority High
School Students provides a rich and realistic overview of journalism
in New York. The program is designed to motivate talented high
school students -- from groups underrepresented in the media -- to
consider careers in journalism. Over the course of the
program, students will learn about reporting, writing, and word
processing, and produce a newspaper under the direction of an
instructor.
The program now in its 10th year is funded by various New York
news organizations. Currently major funding for the program is
provided through grants from the New York Times, Dow Jones Newspaper
Fund,New York Newspapers Foundation, and Newsday.

Eligibility:
African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic, and Native American
students who will be juniors or seniors in high school. High
school seniors in the graduating class also are eligible. Students
will be selected on the basis of interest, academic achievement, and
writing ability. Format:
From July 9 through July 26, 2001, students will meet four days a
week (Monday through Thursday) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm at Queens
College. There will be guest speakers from the New York media and at
least one field trip to a news organization. Students will
learn to write leads, news and feature articles, and produce a
newspaper.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Students should submit a completed application form along with a
school transcript, two letters of recommendation, a 500-word essay
detailing interest in Journalism and the summer workshop.
